Old Fashioned Strawberry Cake
June 29, 2015
Oh goodness, I have been walking down memory lane, will you walk with me?
Let's celebrate this Fourth of July like we used to, homemade ice cream, sparklers,
maybe even a cap gun and oh anxiously anticipating the Fireworks in Town after the sun sets.
Lets have just one slice of strawberry cake before we venture out...
the kind just like Mom used to make.
Oh remember these cakes, the ones that tasted just as sweet as a sugar cookie and if you were lucky
you could eat the batter straight from the striped mixing bowl, as soon as the cake pans were filled.
And oh the fluffy, swirly frosting made with butter and powdered sugar and just maybe if we
were lucky we got to lick the spoon, or maybe stick a finger in the bowl when Mom wasn't looking.
One of the very best things about this recipe is the no nonsense list of ingredients, and just so
you will know-My oldest daughter told me "Mom, this tastes just like a cake Grandma would make."
Grab a patriotic candle or two just for good measure, and if the cake isn't picture perfect,
no worries, the flavor is.
I am chilling with a couple of the granddaughters a few days this week while their parents are
vacationing, I'll be stopping by to visit you all very, very soon!

That strawberry cake looks soooooooooooooooooooo good - making a copy to make here! Thanks. Happy 4th of July!
ReplyDeleteGood morning beloved Jemma! OK, you ARE taking me down memory lane!
ReplyDeleteOK, first of all, anything homemade and strawberry brings up so many images in my mind's eye. The distinct flavor of a freshly picked IN SEASON strawberry comes to mind. I was a child in the fabulous 60s and I seem to remember that this cake was popular AS WELL AS ORANGE CAKE...do you remember that? Do you remember Coca-Cola cake, or 7Up cake? All these goodies were made with mother's undivided attention with wholesome and simple ingredients, with the good old hand mixer from which I stole many a lickful of batter! HAHAHAHHAHA
Let's celebrate the light within with a sparkler or two, and think of one another. Much love to you! Anita
Hello Jemma, your cake sounds and looks delicious. I will have to copy this recipe, it sounds awesome for the 4th of July party. Enjoy your visit with the granddaughters. Have a happy day and new week ahead!
ReplyDeleteI was one of the lucky ones you write about here! The Fourth was wonderful and of course back then I didn't even notice the 90 degree temps. Daddy churning Mama's homemade peach ice cream and sparklers and the uncles wetting off fireworks that we cousins had to stand far back during. Stories from the aunts around a fire at night while we toasted marshmallows. Such good memories! Thank you Jemma for sparking them.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!

ReplyDeleteOh my! Looks just luscious! I have never had a strawberry cake like this. A must try while the strawberries are local! I just posted a favorite strawberry pretzel dessert from the 1980's that I found again. Maybe you know the one....with cream cheese?
ReplyDeleteHi Jemma. oh how delicious this cake looks. Perfect for the 4th of July. Enjoy your family and a wonderful 4th of July weekend.

Jemma, your strawberry cake looks so moist and delicious. Oh, how I remember the frosting back in the day. I still make it from time to time. And those festive candles really say "the fourth is here!" I have been thinking about the Fourth of July and remembering how we used to celebrate it. We used to have big block parties growing up, and sparklers and watermelon were a must hehehe.
ReplyDeleteHave fun with your granddaughters this week, Jemma. And you really did a fantastic job on this cake.
love, ~Sheri

This cake belongs on the cover of 'Tasts of Home' magazine! If it tastes half as good as it looks, I'm in, calories be damned!
ReplyDeleteYummo. I'm juicing today. :) This looks like heaven to me.

Your cake looks so yummy, but I'll have to pass! I have been such a "good girl" on not consuming sugar. My strawberries these days are on top of Greek yogurt or granola. ;-) Have a happy and safe holiday, Jemma!
ReplyDeleteThat looks so good! Will have to try it ! xo K
ReplyDeleteHow I love it here; I see many a great blogger pal, and now YOU, you are part of this community I love so. Jemma, your visit this morning to my blog post means so much to me. I tried to write a little bit more of a structured poem, trying to contain my wild passion for the sea, my life.
