Mother's Sour Cream Sugar Cookies Decorated For Fall
I believe that we all need a really good sugar cookie recipe in our baking repertoire and perhaps even more so for the Holidays.
Today I am sharing the mystery of what it is that makes my Mother's Sour cream Sugar Cookies so delicious, as well as some links to other great sugar cookie recipes which I have made and shared throughout the years.
Memories are made through the heart and tummy!
As I continue sharing some of my favorite Holiday recipes throughout the coming days, I simply must share some stories of days gone by.
Memories and food pretty much go together and my Mother was the Queen of good food and creating wonderful childhood memories too.
Freshly Baked Sugar Cookies
I remember hopping off the rickety school bus and running through the front door, I knew right away that I was in for a treat.
Mother had just taken the freshly baked homemade sour cream sugar cookies out of the oven and sugary sweetness wafted through our bright and cheery yellow kitchen.
There was no time to wait for the frosting, because with these soft and delectable sugar cookies frosting was simply an option!
Mother's Sugar Cookies Are The BOMB!
Mother's Sugar Cookies were the bomb with my kiddos too and she would always have fresh baked sugar cookies waiting for them when we came to visit.
So not only did I adore these tender cookies, so did the kids.
Where Did Mother's Famous Sugar Cookie Recipe Go????
I have all of Mother's Cookbooks, her recipe box and even those of my grandmother.
Sadly enough, a few of Mother's recipes seemed to have gotten lost after her passing.
Unfortunately our favorite sugar cookie recipe was one of the recipes that was no where to be found.
Mother passed away when I was in my mid-forties and as the years marched on without her I have continued to make many, many sugar cookies.
Mary's Sugar Cookie Recipe with Andes Mints are Wonderful!
One year I made Christmas Cookies For Santa using Mary's Sugar Cookie Recipe and add Andes Mints.
The combination of the creamy sugar cookie, chocolate and mint was quite incredible.
They were a real hit with Santa and the Children!
Mother's Sour Cream Sugar Cookie Is FOUND! Hoorah!
Losing Mother's Sour Cream sugar Cookie Recipe has been a disappointment for our family.
Clearly we were all spoiled by Mother!💗
Low and behold my daughter Samantha; Crafty Texas Girls dug dip into research and found a sugar cookie recipe that is just like Mothers!
Can you imagine our glee!
The mystery is now solved as to what it was that made Mother's cookies so wonderful; there were two secret ingredients, nutmeg and sour cream ( we had no clue she used either!)
She was such a tricky little baker 💗
Mother's Sour Cream Sugar Cookies
Ingredients
- Bake in 375-degree oven for 8-10 minutes or until they puff up. Be careful not to overbake.
- 4 cups flour
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- ½ tsp. baking soda
- ½ tsp. salt
- ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg
- 1 cup butter softened
- 1 ½ cups white sugar
- 2 large eggs room temperature
- 2 tsp. vanilla
- ½ cup sour cream
Instructions
- Sift dry ingredients together in a mixing bowl
- In a separate bowl using a hand-held mixer or stationery mixer cream together butter and sugar.
- Beat in egg until well incorporated.
- Fold in sour cream and vanilla.
- Stir in dry ingredients. Don’t over mix or dough will become tough.
- Wrap in saran wrap and chill 4-6 hours.
- Cut into desired shapes.
- Ingredients
- 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening*
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups sifted powdered sugar (confectioners' sugar)
- 2 tablespoons milk, heavy cream or water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Directions
- Using an electric mixer with a paddle cream together the softened butter and vegetable shortening, until fluffy.
- Add Vanilla
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, scraping the sides of the bowl with spatula.
- Frosting will be stiff, slowly add milk or water in small amounts until desired consistency.
- I kept the consistency of the frosting moderately stiff so I could decorate these cookies with a star tip.
- Frosting can be stored up to one month.
Three Quick Tips On How To Decorate Sugar Cookies
- Mix up a batch of Butter cream frosting. (recipe is included above.)
- Color the frosting using professional colors so you can get rich colors.
- Using a large spoon put frosting in the decorating bag add a star tip and decorate.
