Today we are kicking off the New Year by making perfect homemade White Bread! This is a fantastic basic and straightforward bread recipe that is just right for the seasoned baker and perfect for the beginning baker as well.
Old-Fashioned Goodness
Choosing this recipe all began with my quest for a warm slice of delicious old-fashioned homemade bread topped with a generous dollop of creamy butter. I had gotten a bee in my bonnet on New Year's Eve that I wanted a crusty homemade bread for our New Year's Day dinner.
Inspired by Anjou's
You see we had gone out to an early dinner on New Year's Eve to Anjou's . Anjou's is our favorite French Bistro and they serve the best warm bread!
Round Loaves
But the idea doesn't stop here- because these loaves had to be round rather than rectangular just like Anjou's. Rectangular was definitely unacceptable for this particular situation.
Earthy and Artisanal
You see I was going for more of an authentic, earthy, artisanal bake and that meant the loaves of bread must be round and golden and oh crusty too.
In fact the only mechanical method I used for these was my stand mixer and that was pretty minimal. This recipe does require kneading...but that is part of the charm and outstanding texture! Not to mention a bit of an arm workout!
How To Bake Round Bread Loaves
I quickly realized that I needed information on how to bake a round loaf of bread.
Many folks bake their round loaves of bread in their Lodge Cast Iron bakeware. Unfortunately my cast iron dutch oven gave out on me about 2 years ago so here I am applying the old proverb that indeed necessity is the motherhood of invention -Plato.
No-Fail Bread Recipe
Baking is totally different than cooking. Baking requires patience it cannot be rushed.
When baking it is important to pick a day and time when you can practice patience and really live in the joy of baking!

Supplies For Making White Bread-Round Loaves
- Mixing Bowls
- Bench Scraper (cutting and shaping dough)
- Stand Mixer with dough hook
- Wooden Pastry Board/kneading board
- Measuring Cups
- Measuring Spoons
- Wooden Spoon
- Baker's Lam
Ingredients for making Perfect Homemade White Bread-Round Loaves
- 1 package active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 2 cups milk, scalded
- 2 Tablespoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon shortening
- 5 3/4 to 6 1/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
I feel most certain that you will be enjoying this perfect white bread which boasts a beautiful golden crust as much as we did.
It is perfect served fresh from the oven, toasted in the morning with a dab of jam or if you have any slices leftover simply cube the bread and make homemade croutons!
